This pumpkin pie smoothie blends up in five minutes with canned pumpkin, Medjool dates, and coconut milk. No banana needed and it tastes just like a slice of pumpkin pie.

Two pumpkin pie smoothies on a wood cutting board surrounded by spices and a kitchen towlel.

This pumpkin pie smoothie started as a way to use up the half can of pumpkin puree I always seem to have sitting in the fridge, and it has turned into something I make on repeat from September straight through the holidays.

Medjool dates do all the sweetening, canned coconut milk makes it genuinely creamy rather than watery, and a spoonful of hemp seeds adds a little staying power. There is no banana in it, which matters if you have ever had a smoothie recipe hijacked by banana flavor. If you like this one, my pumpkin pie overnight oats and pumpkin baked oatmeal are two more ways I work through a can of pumpkin.

Why I Love This Pumpkin Pie Smoothie

Woman (Brittany Mullins) wearing a white shirt and sipping a green smoothie.
  • Dates instead of refined sugar: Two Medjool dates sweeten the entire glass and bring a caramel note that plain maple syrup does not. They also add fiber, which is not something you can say about most sweeteners.
  • Easy to make it high protein: As written this is more of a snack than a meal. Add a scoop of vanilla protein powder or a few spoonfuls of Greek yogurt and it becomes breakfast.
  • Good year round, not just in October: Readers make this in June and I do too. Cold, creamy, and spiced is a combination that works whenever you want it.

Pumpkin Smoothie Ingredients

Dates, hemp seeds, pumpkin pie spice, pumpkin and coconut milk measured out on a table next to a striped kitchen towel.
  • canned coconut milk – this is what makes the smoothie thick and custardy instead of thin. Shake or stir the can well before measuring since it separates on the shelf. Regular or light both work, though regular gives you the richest result.
  • pumpkin puree – canned pumpkin or homemade pumpkin puree both work. Double check the label and grab pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling, which is already loaded with sugar and will throw the whole thing off.
  • pumpkin pie spice – store-bought is fine or you can make your own with what is already in your spice cabinet. Homemade tastes noticeably fresher if you have the five minutes.
  • medjool dates – the only sweetener in the recipe. Medjool dates are softer and more caramel-like than deglet noor dates, which makes them blend much more smoothly. Buy them pitted or pit them yourself.
  • hemp seeds – technically optional but I almost always add them. They blend in completely and add a little protein and healthy fat so the smoothie holds you longer.

Substitutions

  • Coconut milk: Any milk works if you do not have canned coconut milk on hand, just know the smoothie will be thinner and less rich. Full-fat oat milk is the closest swap for creaminess.
  • Pumpkin puree: Canned butternut squash puree works surprisingly well and tastes very similar.
  • Medjool dates: Maple syrup or honey work if you want to skip the dates entirely. For a lower sugar option, use a few drops of liquid stevia or monk fruit instead.
  • Hemp seeds: Chia seeds, ground flaxseed, or a scoop of vanilla protein powder all work here depending on whether you want fat or protein.

Tips for the Best Pumpkin Pie Smoothie

  • Soak your dates if they are dry: Fresh Medjool dates blend into nothing, but if yours have been in the pantry a while they will leave gritty bits behind. Cover them in hot water for 10 minutes, drain, and then blend. This is the fix for almost every date-sweetened recipe.
  • Freeze your pumpkin puree in an ice cube tray: This is my favorite trick for this smoothie. Portion leftover canned pumpkin into an ice cube tray and freeze. Then you can skip the ice entirely and get a thicker, colder smoothie with more pumpkin flavor instead of watered-down flavor.
  • Taste before you pour: Dates vary a lot in size and sweetness. Give the smoothie a taste and add half a date more if it needs it. It is much easier to fix in the blender than in the glass.
Two glasses with thick pumpkin smoothie and two straws. A teaspoon with pumpkin spice is next to the glasses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make this pumpkin pie smoothie higher in protein?

Add a scoop of vanilla protein powder or a few tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt. Both will thicken things up considerably, so add an extra splash of milk to get the consistency back where you want it.

Can I drink this pumpkin smoothie year round?

Absolutely, and plenty of readers do. It is one of the few pumpkin recipes that actually works in warm weather since it is cold and refreshing rather than baked and cozy.

Why is my pumpkin smoothie gritty?

Almost always the dates. If they are dry or your blender is not high powered, they will not fully break down. Soak them in hot water for 10 minutes first, or blend them with the coconut milk before adding the rest.

  1. Literally tastes exactly like pumpkin pie filling – only without the added sugar! I added about a quarter tablespoon of green powder and you couldn’t even taste it. This recipe is healthy, delicious, and screams of fall!

This is so good!! I didn’t have coconut milk the first time and used regular milk. It was very good but definitely a lot creamier when I used the coconut milk. It’s a great snack or dessert option with no guilt associated. Thank you EBF!
